About Kevin Mahogany

Like many famous musicians, Mahogany got an early start in the music world. As early as when he was in the third grade, he started playing the piano, then moved to clarinet before shifting to baritone saxophone.

His inspirations form the world of jazz music included big names like Eddie Jefferson, Johnny Hartman and Jon Hendricks. The jazz music of 1960s and 1970s was something he understood and took forward but with his own unique stamp on the performances.

As a lead singer, his first album came out in 1993 titled ‘Double Rainbow’ (Enja Records). His multiple talents were already visible in this album. Soon, he was able to make a name in the world of jazz music.

Kansas Soul And Jazz Legend

1993 was the year when Mahogany came out with his debut album – ‘Double Rainbow.’ His vocals were paired with the piano of Kenny Barron, saxophone of Ralph Moore, drums of Lewis Nash and bass from Ray Drummond.

What made him even more prominent and a standout figure was the fact that unlike many other jazz vocalists who move away from the traditional form of the music and start exploring more commercially profitable opportunities, he remained dedicated to the pure form of his art.

He went on to record 10 albums with various companies in his music career spanning over a decade.

Along with that, Warner Brothers also released a compilation album of his songs while there was an album in which he featured as one member of a quartet of performers led by Deborah Brown.
